Are You Intimidated By Pinterest? #PinterestFails

I must admit I am an avid follower of Pinterest…I love the glossy, bright images from hair tutorials to classroom projects…I am an addict and can’t help but wonder how cool it must be to create an exact replica.  So over the weekend, I decided to put my love of Pinterest to the test.  But regardless of how closely I followed the directions, it just didn’t end up like the picture.  Keep reading and find out if and how I redemmed myself.

In celebrating Dr. Seuss’ Birthday in B’s classroom, I decided on this easy arts and craft project and then after much browsing on Pinterest I came across this 3 ingredient snack  – Oreo cookies, marshmallows, red sugar – thats it!

To make this cute Cat In the Hat Snack, the directions read like this:

– Start by separating the Oreo cookies

–  Dip one side of the marshmallow in water, then the red sugar.  Turn them over, then the other

–  Place the marshmallow on top of the creme Oreo.  If you have any white frosting, sometimes it sticks better with a little dab of frosting.

And this is how it should look!  Awesomeness, right?!?

Now its my turn…

I started by separating the Oreo cookies. Check.

Now, why didn’t anyone tell me that marshmallows came in different sizes?? There’s tiny ones like these, jumbo ones like these, and super giant ones like these.

I ended up using the giant ones (what did I know??).

Per the instructions I simply dipped the marshmallows in some water and dipped in the red sugar, unfortunately either my red sugar was cheap or way too much water was used.

It failed to mention that the color would run down the marshmallow creating more of a horror themed Cat In The Hat, not exactly what I was going for with a group of 5 year olds. Yikes!

And since I brought the mega large marshmallows the Oreo is nowhere to be seen.

Here’s mine!

OK, after 5 attempts, 3 trips to the supermarket, I decided to let the water dry a little before dipping it in the red sugar…and wow what an improvement.

Here’s the final look!  What do you think??
